Osborne House and Balmoral Castle, in the Isle of Wight and the
Scottish Highlands respectively, have occupied a special part in Queen Victoria's House.
Here, she spent the best years of her married life, together with Prince Albert
and her children. Here, she savored her success as a queen and endured the
bitterness of the Prince Consort's death.
When she died, Balmoral Castle passed on to his son, King Edward
VII. To this day, it remains the personal property of the sovereign, serving
the royal family's summer residence. Meanwhile, Osborne House was given to the
state. It housed the Royal Naval College until 1923 and was eventually
opened to public to this day.
