- 1. The bride, now the Duchess of Sussex, wore an unexpectedly minimalist gown designed by Clare Waight Keller, a British designer who was appointed as Givenchy’s artistic director just last year, the first female to do so! The all-white, boat-neck dress has been lauded for its bold simplicity.
2. The Queen reportedly made Meghan choose
the tiara she will be wearing for her special day. Her final pick was a diamond
bandeau previously owned by Queen Mary.
3. Meghan’s veil, more than anything else, was a tribute to all 53 countries of the Commonwealth, each represented by its own unique flora.
4. Meghan walked down aisle all by herself, the first time a royal bride sashayed all the way to the altar alone. She, however, was joined halfway by Prince Harry’s father, Prince Charles.
5. The Royal Wedding was star-studded to say the least. Some of the celebrities present during the event were: Oprah Winfrey; Elton John; George Clooney and her humanitarian lawyer wife Amal (who wore a jaw-dropping yellow number); one of the bride’s closest friends, tennis superstar Serena Williams, and her husband, Reddit executive chairman Alexis Kerry Ohanian; David and Victoria Beckham; Idris Elba; and, Meghan’s Suits co-stars.
6. Though Meghan’s father Thomas failed to attend the wedding due to health reasons, her mother Doria Ragland was there to witness her daughter’s most special day.
7. Zimbabwean businesswoman Chelsy Davy, Prince Harry’s former girlfriend, was also in attendance during the Royal Wedding. She made quite an impression with her weird facial expressions, which caught the attention of viewers and netizens.
8. The presence of Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, made headlines as she already had been considered a Royal Family outcast after she and former husband, Prince Andrew, divorced. She allegedly did not receive an invite to Prince William’s and Catherine’s wedding back in 2011.
9. A clip of Prince Harry whispering the words “You look amazing” while looking Meghan dead in the eyes immediately went viral. Two beautiful people passionately in love!
10. Sheku Kanneh-Mason’s heart-rending cello performance has been deemed by many as one of the highlights of the whole ceremony. The 19-year-old musician was the first black recipient of BBC’s Musician of the Year accolade.
11. The Kingdom Choir and Karen Gibson did an unforgettable rendition of Ben E King’s ‘Stand By Me’ just before the couple said their vows.
12. Bishop Michael Curry’s sermon, which may have been new to the British state of affairs, was delivered with charisma and aplomb. He touched on topics like the power of love as well as slavery, repeatedly quoting Martin Luther King, Jr. all throughout his lengthy speech. "Two young people fell in love, and we all showed up," he said at one point, eliciting laughs from the crowd.
13. The Queen wore vibrant Stuart Parvin creations—a floral flared dress under a silk tweed coat in lime. She also donned herself with a matching lime-colored hat by Angela Kelly, accentuated with a purple-colored sinamay that was made even more grandiose by pearl and lace crystal embellishments courtesy of Lucy Price.
14. Prince Philip graced the event despite undergoing hip surgery just a month prior the wedding. He even walked unassisted toward his seat, which was located at the front of the chapel.
15. “Guide Me, Oh Thou Great Redeemer” was played before the start of ceremony. The said hymn was also played during the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding, and more significantly during Princess of Wales Diana’s funeral.
