A Wedding Ball for The Queen's Favorite Cousin

Queen Elizabeth II hosted a glittering wedding ball on the eve of the wedding of her cousin, Princess Alexandra, to Sir Angus Ogilvy, the second son of Lord and Lady Airlie.

The ball was a token of gratitude from The Queen to the princess for the support she gave to Her Majesty. The Queen had the castle's Waterloo Chamber refurbished for this splendid affair, well-attended by some two thousand guests, who were also invited to the wedding ceremony. A host of royalty, who were all closely related to the would-be-bride, joined in the festive night, including  King Olav of Norway, Queen Frederica of Greece, Queen Louise of Sweden, Queen Ingrid and Princess Anne Marie of Denmark, Queen Victoria Eugenie of Spain and Queen Helen of Romania.

Princess Alexandra wore for the first time the Ogilvy tiara, which was one of the gifts she received from her soon-to-be husband. The suite of jewels  included a necklace designed after Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee necklace and coordinating earrings.
