Since succeeding to the throne in 1952, Queen Elizabeth II has hardly missed attending the Royal Maundy service, held every Maundy Thursday of each year. In fact, it was the Maundy service of 1952, which was The Queen's first-ever public engagement as sovereign. Since then, she has distributed Maundy money to individuals who are chosen for service to their churches or communities, on the recommendation of clergymen of various Christian denominations. The Queen has also started a new tradition of travelling to various cathedrals or abbeys to give gifts on this occasion. She has since visited every Anglican Cathedral in England for the Maundy Service.
