The Prince of Wales has attended the installation service of the Order of the Bath at Westminster Abbey on May 24. Prince Charles was installed as the Great Master of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath by no other than Queen Elizabeth II, who is the Sovereign of the Order. Nine new members were inducted into the order of the chivalry. The order was established as a military order by Letters Patent of George I dated May 18, 1725, when the Dean of Westminster was made Dean of the Order in perpetuity and King Henry VII's Lady Chapel at Westminster Abbey designated as the Chapel of the Order. The Order was a revival of an older custom that dates back to medieval period. It involved a ceremony of knighthood that included a ritual bath symbolic of spiritual purification and a vigil the night before receiving the honour. Today, recipients of the Order are usually senior military officers or senior civil servants.
