Prince and Princess Michael is reportedly set to retire from public life, royal correspondent Camilla Tominey reports for The Telegraph

“The retirement of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent brings down the curtain on a colourful royal career, punctuated by a seemingly never-ending stream of controversies,” writes Victoria Ward

The prince, who will turn 80 this July, and his wife, the 77-year-old Czech-born Baroness Marie-Christine von Reibnitz, are among the most colourful yet controversial members of the British Royal Family. Last March, the Prince has returned the Russian Order of Friendship, one of the highest orders in Russia, amidst Russian’s invasion on Ukraine. The honour was bestowed upon him by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in 2009 for his work on Anglo-Russo relations.

It is expected that Prince Michael’s household will make an announcement regarding the couple’s retirement. Last year, Prince Michael was embroiled in yet another brouhaha after undercover reporters for Sunday Times and Channel 4 exposed him of using his royal position to help businesses gain access to Vladimir Putin. The prince's private secretary denied to the Sunday Times that he had a "special relationship" with the Russian president and made it clear that he was not contact with President Putin or his office for almost 18 years.

Princess Michael, on the other hand, has been suffering from health problems after contracting COVID-19 in November 2020 and has experienced "extreme fatigue and fevers."

Prince and Princess Michael of Kent  are not working members of the Royal Family but have represented the Queen in the past and also maintains their own patronages. He earns a living through a long-established consultancy company and the couple pay market rent and fees for their home at Kensington Palace. Princess Michael of Kent, meanwhile, is an author and has also dabbled on a career in interior decorating.
