Princess Alexandra walked on her wedding day wearing a gown made by John Cavanagh, a leading British designer, who also made the dress worn by the former Miss Katharine Worsley on her wedding to Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, in 1961. Cavanagh had designed clothes for the princess' many overseas tours, starting when she began to accompany her mother on foreign trips in the early 1950s.
Princess Alexandra's wedding gown was made of "magnolia tinted lace, swathed high at the neck and down to the wrists, molded at the waist and falling away swiftly into a heavy train 20 feet long." (New York Times)
Her veil was "edged with Valenciennes lace," which came from the princess' maternal grandmother, Princess Nicholas of Greece. She wore the same tiara worn by Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent, when she married the Duke of Kent, in November 1934.
Indeed, high fashion reigned supreme at Princess Alexandra and Sir Angus Ogilvy's wedding. The bride's mother chose a gold tunic dress with embroidered underskirt, while The Queen wore a green silk organza dress with embroidered flowers. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother donned a Norman Hartnell gray lace dress and coat. Princess Margaret, the bride's cousin, attended the ceremony wearing a yellow organza coat massed with yellow primroses over matching organza shift.
